“Composed with luminous synths and melodic vocal lines, the U.K. trio’s latest album is an unabashed venture into warped pop music. – NPR Music

“achingly pretty warmth” - FADER
Darkstar are pleased to share the video for their most recent single “A Day’s Pay For A Day’s Work” off of News From Nowhere, released earlier this year.
Filmed in a community center in South London, the video captures the trio taking part in numerous trust-building exercises and activities, ranging from falling backwards into the arms of others to taking part in a conga drum ensemble. Directed by London-based writer/director Lucy Luscombe (http://lucyluscombe.com), it’s a beautifully apt visual accompaniment to a stirring single that candidly touches on the subjects of confidence, self-esteem and relationships.
The band are also set to announce a series of remix EPs, that sees several News From Nowhere stand out tracks reworked by the likes of Zomby, Motor City Drum Ensemble, the band themselves and more. Expanded details to come soon!
Following the recent announce of Kwes’ debut album ilp, the young singer/songwriter/producer is sharing the video for its lead single “36”.
The video candidly showcases the highs and lows of school-age first crushes, when simply locking eyes or sharing headphones could cause a roller coaster of emotions. The song itself was inspired by the relationship of Kwes’ grandparents, proving that giddy feeling of young love can endure.
His ability to craft unique, heart-on-the-sleeve lyrics is rooted in his production skills, which he has honed over the years working with everyone from the xx to Damon Albarn. With ilp his sound has evolved to an experimental take on pop sensibilities, referred to as Freepop by Kwes.
“One minute, Lucius sounds like a ’60s girl group; the next might conjure images of Emmylou Harris. The charisma and charm of the women at Lucius’ center, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, helps transform good pop songwriting into an endearing performance.”– NPR, Bob Boilen

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Brooklyn-based collective Mason Jar Music assembled an all-star collection of indie-folk artists to create The Storm is Passing Over, a benefit album of fifteen classic American storm songs. Honored to be involved with the project alongside greats such as Roseanne Cash, Abigail Washburn & Béla Fleck (among others), Lucius recorded the traditional song “Wayfaring Stranger” which can be heard HERE. With 100% of the proceeds going directly to support Hurricane Sandy victims via Occupy Sandy, please consider supporting the album and purchasing The Storm is Passing, here.
2012 was a busy year for Lucius. They released their self-titled debut EP, produced by Tony Berg (Beck, Aimee Mann), Steve Wall (Meshell Ndegeocello), and band member Dan Molad (Elizabeth & The Catapult, Here We Go Magic), a mix of emotionally-charged and upbeat 60′s-inspired tracks which has received praise from the likes of Seventeen Magazine, NPR and SPIN. The band toured with JD McPherson, Milo Greene and Pearl and the Beard, and had songs featured on the television shows 90210 and Emily Owens MD.
Lucius’ highly-anticipated debut full-length album is scheduled for release this year, which has everyone from PASTE to KEXP (and beyond) very excited. We know you’ll be too.

“She’s got smoky eyes that draw you near but there’s a darkness in them that keeps your outstretched arms from wrapping around her. But, no matter how hard you try, you still can’t walk away. Watch Brooklyn’s Ava Luna flirt with temptation in this shivering version of their debut LP‘s title track, “Ice Level,” shot at Different Fur Studios.” – Yourstru.ly
It’s 2013 and the remains of Earth resemble Pluto, a lonesome tundra. Our van survives, and so do we, and we decided that we should continue our traditions. We’ve been working on new songs to this effect — and since sharing is the most beautiful form of celebration, we booked a tour. We’ll see old friends, gain a new outlook, and share these sounds. The new songs are like blankets, let’s see how well they weather this dangerous new world.
After a Chinese Democracy-esque gestation period, our new music video is finally here. Thank you to everyone who made this with us. You can see the video on Noisey HERE.
Carlos Hernandez tells Noisey: “I wanted to tell a little story, where Becca (our leading lady) escapes from a sticky situation. The trusty narrator (yours truly) watches, from a dark, geometrical vantage point, as a social scenario plays out. I love parties! Especially when everyone is invited.“
Coming soon – pre-order link for tour inspired mystery release, featuring brand new songs.

New York soul singer Sophia Bastian has released an alluring new video for “Gloryboxed”. Inspired by mixtape culture, Sophia wanted to pay homage to Portishead’s classic “Glory Box” and took the instrumental to a new place. “I used to listen to ‘Glory Box’ as a kid a lot and was always mesmerized by the melancholy mystique of it,” says Sophia. Watch the video here.
Sophia co-directed and styled the video alongside directors Severin Winzenburg and DP Jakob Wiessner to create a classic cinema aesthetic. They sought out a twist on the setting in order to play into the non-transparent storyline; the video was shot on a foggy day against the backdrop of a usual sunny and bright Alpine scenery. Upcoming actor Simon Lohmeyer stars as Sophia’s moody counter part.

“… lyrics that bare her soul and performances that bare her breasts.” – New Yorker
“She juggles bravado and compassion on the way to big, scrappy choruses… “ – The New York Times
Amanda Palmer is thrilled to launch her new video for “Do it With a Rockstar”, the third video from her new album, Theatre is Evil. The video – a sprawling parody of rock star life reminiscent of the Beastie Boys “Fight For Your Right to Party” — premieres today on The Flaming Lips’ website.
The video was co-created and directed by Wayne Coyne (The Flaming Lips), Amanda Palmer, George Salisbury & Michael McQuilken. It also features a fiery performance by seductive starlet Stoya Doll, with additional acting by band members Michael McQuilken, Chad Raines and Jherek Bischoff, along with Tarren Clarke, Dan Heim, Che MF Lucci, Bebe Adams, Renee Hilton, Michael Davis, Stephen Elmore, Adina Verson. The video also features a cameo by Wayne himself.
Filmed over two 105-degree days in Oklahoma City this summer, in five locations (Kamps, The Conservatory, The Boom, Wayne’s house, The Colcord Hotel) Palmer sends a “massive thanks to the awesome video extras of Oklahoma City (and many lands beyond!) who gave their time shouting, dancing, getting glittered, and giving us their beautiful faces.”
“Working with Wayne was an old-school dream come true, as I’ve been following his crazed adventures for years but never met him before. I’m always actively seeking to connect with other crazed renaissance freaks to simply see HOW THEY WORK. Apparently, how it works with Wayne Coyne at a video shoot is simple: everything’s a cosmic improvisation, everyone’s attitude is on enthusiastic overdrive, and if you drop a hint, Wayne will covertly show up with six giant boxes of gold glitter (presumably from Flaming Lips Headquarters, where they must have an endless supply) in the trunk of his car. We hit it off like long lost art-soul-mates, and when I saw Wayne spontaneously climb onto a ceiling pole and stage-dive during the shoot, I thought: note to self, at all costs, wind up like Wayne Coyne. He gave me a great Oklahoma City/Flaming-Lips-History tour after the shoot was over as we bonded over our weird parallel lives, and I really got what I was hoping for…a new friend I could really relate to. We come from the same planet.”
Recorded in Melbourne with producer John Congleton, Theatre Is Evildebuted at #10 its first week on the Billboard charts – and #3 on the Alternative Charts and #2 on the Independent Charts. The new album is Amanda Palmer’s first time working with a full band: The Grand Theft Orchestra, featuring Michael McQuilken, Chad Raines and Jherek Bischoff.
Amanda & GTO valiantly return to the US this week following a month of European dates;
be sure to catch the band’s explosive live show this month!

After four celebrated records, numerous award nominations and a dozen chart hits in her native Sweden, Elin Ruth is back at the beginning. Last year she dropped everything for love and moved across the Atlantic. Now, the acclaimed Swedish singer-songwriter is releasing her first album in the United States. Elin Ruth will be released on Divers Avenue Music on January 29, 2013. The Bang EP will precede the album on November 27. In celebration of her first US releases, Elin is giving away the MP3 of “Bang”, download it here.
Elin Ruth is a playful pop album, eclectic but balanced. Elements of country are mixed with soul and gospel, taking the listener on an emotional journey throughout the 10 songs. Elin says “It’s my most personal record to date. Although I love playing with great musicians, it was a nice challenge to go into the studio and create something on my own. The knowledge that no-one could change anything made me feel very free and creative.“ Elin’s desire for experimentation also shines through in her stage performance. Whether by the piano or alone with her guitar, Elin mesmerizes the audience, filling the room with her slightly raspy voice, powerful stage presence and vocal summersaults.
In many ways, it’s only natural for Elin to end up in the country of her musical heroes. Growing up in the small town of Mönsterås, by the windy Swedish east coast, her dad filled the house with American folkrock. At the time Elin shrugged it off as “old man’s music”, but when her songwriting turned serious in her late teens, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Donovan, Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell all came re-visiting. Elin Ruth is the sound of an artist crossing the world for love and ending up in the country that first inspired her to make music.
In true maverick style, UK’s Theo Keating, has forged his own path as Fake Blood – a hard-hitting, multi genre artist with a cult following like no other. Today, he announces his eagerly anticipated new album Cells, which will be released November 13th via [PIAS] America. In conjunction with this announcement, Keating is streaming the full album on his website. Check out the stream HERE.
Cells is an 11-track distillation of Keating’s surreal vision, an electronic masterpiece skewered by his love of the macabre, the uncanny and the sinister. He has trapped his signature breed of savage, Godzilla-strength basslines and laser-blazing four-to-the-floor inside his very own suspense thriller. On “London,” his jacking rhythm is haunted by taught strings and menacing analogue synthesizers, while “End of Days” is an apocalyptic and cinematic techno opus in which time is running out for whomever is trapped inside the rhythm.
“The album definitely has left-of-center moments because I wanted to show some other facets to what I do and enjoy making,” he says. “Not every track on Cells is overtly made for the dance floor. Some of the sounds will definitely be a bit unorthodox, but, then again, the way I make music is strange to most people: it’s a little bit ‘wrong’ because I never learnt the ‘right’ way to produce.” It’s not all weird-and-wonkiness, though: Cells has its uplifting moments too, especially on All in the Blink, a twist on the humble funkified electro-disco nugget featuring Keating’s fellow Black Ghost, Simon Lord, on vocals.
Since he released his crushingly infectious single, Mars, in 2008, Keating has released another chart-nudging single, I Think I Like It, remixed everyone from Hot Chip and Gossip to Calvin Harris and Sway. Perhaps what makes Keating an even more captivating producer, though, is that he has cracked the key to what musicians crave most of all: longevity. “You just need a hunger for new music, a curiosity that needs constant feeding and, crucially, be open to change,” he muses. “The enemy is nostalgia. If you can always find stuff that excites or interests you, and let that inspire you to try new ideas, then you can enjoy yourself. That, really, is at the heart of it all.”
If ever that rulebook needs rewriting, we’d give Theo Keating the blood-inked quill any day.
